What is Maundy Thursday?

What is Maundy Thursday?

Holy Thursday is also known as 'Maundy Thursday.'  The word maundy comes from the Latin word mandatum (commandment) which is the first word of the Gospel acclamation:

Mandatum novum do vobis dicit Dominus, ut diligatis invicem, sicut dilexi vos.

"I give you a new commandment: Love one another as I have loved you." (John 13.34)

Maundy Thursday is observed by Christians worldwide.  It is a day that commemorates the washing of the feet and Jesus Christ's Last Supper with his disciples; it reminds us of the importance of humility, selflessness and service to others.

The day holds a crucial place in Holy Week, which starts with Palm Sunday and culminates with Easter Sunday.

Stations of the Cross

Stations of the Cross

Good Friday 3rd April 2026 @ 3pm

An annual tradition. We join together for a simple, yet poignant 'walk' through the Stations of the Cross in St A's sanctuary.

This devotion first arose in Jerusalem out of veneration for those sacred places sanctified by the sufferings of Jesus Christ.

According to tradition, there are fourteen Stations of the Cross, beginning with Jesus condemned to death and ending with his body placed in the sepulcher.

The traditional English sonnet also has fourteen lines, or stations.

Combining the fourteen Stations of the cross with a sonnet structure, allowing one line in the sonnet for each Station,

we can describe the entire ritual in a complete poem.

In St A's Stations of the Cross experience a sonnet has been written for each one of the Stations.

The first lines from each one of the fourteen sepaate sonnets are then assembled to make a final work

Diocesan Easter Vigil

Diocesan Easter Vigil

Holy Saturday, 4th April, at All Saint's Cathedral 8pm - 10pm

You are invited to a diocesan-wide Easter Vigil Service on Holy Saturday, April 4, beginning at 8 pm.

In the darkness, fire is kindled, and we pray:
Dear friends in Christ: On this most holy night, in which our
Lord Jesus passed over from death to life, the Church invites
her members, dispersed throughout the world, to gather in
vigil and prayer. For this is the Passover of the Lord, in which,
by hearing his Word and celebrating his Sacraments, we share
in his victory over death.

About the Easter Vigil:

The service begins in darkness, sometime between sunset on Holy Saturday and sunrise on Easter, and consists of four parts:
  • The Service of Light (kindling of new fire, lighting the Paschal candle, and the Exsultet, which is the powerful proclamation of the Resurrection composed before the 7th Century);
  • The Service of Lessons (readings from the Hebrew Scriptures interspersed with psalms, canticles, and prayers);
  • Christian Initiation (Holy Baptism) or the Renewal of Baptismal Vows;
  • The first Eucharist of Easter.
Through this liturgy, the BCP recovers an ancient practice of keeping the Easter feast. Believers would gather in the hours of darkness ending at dawn on Easter to hear scripture and offer prayer. This night-long service of prayerful watching anticipated the baptisms that would come at first light and the Easter Eucharist. Easter was the primary baptismal occasion, and this practice linked the meanings of Christ's dying and rising to the understanding of baptism. (information from An Episcopal Dictionary of the Church)

All are welcome to join this moving and joyous celebration, which will take place at All Saints' Anglican Cathedral, 10035 103 ST NW, Edmonton, and will be livestreamed on the Cathedral's YouTube channel.
