End of Summer Rummage Sale

End of Summer Rummage Sale

Friday August 25th & Saturday August 26th 2023

St A's started the summer off with a rummage sale and has decided to end the summer with a similar event - 'bookend rummage sales!!"

The sale is set up in the Annex basement and we are hoping to add a lot of items to it; perhaps it's time to do a little summer clearout if you have the time and inclination.  Drop offs are being accepted every Saturday and Sunday from now until the start of the sale on the 25th.  (August 12th/13th and 19th/20th).

Hours the sale is due to take place will be available nearer to the date. On Saturday the 26th there will also be hot dogs, cotton candy and freezie's, and maybe more, available to purchase.

We also require volunteers to assist with organising, pricing and displaying of all the items that have been donated .. if anyone has a few spare hours your help would be greatly appreciated.  Please text Jodi Howard (780-953-9510) for further details regarding taking part.

Care of Creation - A Team Effort

Care of Creation - A Team Effort

Season of Creation Resources Available Now

Season of Creation resources designed as a kind of ‘grab bag’ for parishes to use to help shape their Sundays between September 1 and the feast day of St. Francis, can now be found on the diocesan website

The Fifth Mark in Action Sub-committee of the diocesan Social Justice Committee provides a theme, prayer resources, resource links, hymn suggestions, challenge ideas, and a small video that can be used on Sunday or in a small group setting.

Care of creation is a team effort, so lay members who are passionate about this, could offer to lead these portions, or to support their priest’s lead in this regard.

And, while this work can seem crushing and hopeless, be sure to celebrate what you are doing already – we don’t encourage one another on the way often enough. Every small action is worth celebrating, as we seek to not only change a light bulb but to step boldly into a whole new way of thinking and being as ecologically alert Christians.

We should also remember that we are not alone in our work, but the whole Christian world is being united through this collective action. Perhaps, other denominations near you are doing similar work. Our churches together can let the Land teach us the good and common life. Submitted by the Rev. Jonathan Crane and the Rev. Clare Stewart, the 5th Mark in Action Sub-committee

Compassion Camp

Compassion Camp

Compassion Camp is a five-day summer camp program for children ages five and up. Each day has its own theme, music, crafts and activities all centered around small simple acts of compassion. Children over 14 will get to participate in camp as a Leader-In-Training, gaining both the benefits of the daily lessons and an opportunity to share their strengths as they assist our younger campers during crafts and games. Everyone attending camp, including volunteers, will receive a t-shirt and sticker.

The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius

The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius

Uncover the Heart of your Call

By Rev. Dan Ash, Pat Jameson, Rev. Jonathan Crane

Loyola Press – a major source of references on the spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius describes the exercises as “a compilation of meditations, prayers, and contemplative practices developed by St. Ignatius of Loyola to help people deepen their relationship with God.” The exercises are a structured and guided approach designed to uncover the heart of our call to serve God and God’s people. St. Ignatius in his time, developed them as a tool to help young men discern if they were indeed called to serve as a Jesuit and take up the potential dangers of being sent all over the world in witness to God (think the movie “The Mission”). Originally, the Spiritual Exercises were used within a thirty-day silent retreat.  There remain a number of retreat houses in the world where you can still do this, but the Exercises are more commonly used these days as a thirty-week “retreat in daily life.” The structure of the weeks is a progressive immersion in scripture and prayer: they are not primarily an intellectual study of the scriptures, but a personal experience of the life of Jesus through prayer.  The process allows us grow in our ability to hear how deeply the Spirit of God is speaking to our spirit through the scriptures. The Exercises are broken into four sections, or movements of prayer through the thirty weeks. Theme I: God’s Love.  The exercises begin with an immersion in the love of God which invites us into a generous offering of our whole selves just as we are. Theme II: Invitation.  The second movement focusses on God’s hope for the world as it is expressed in the gift of Jesus and his ministry and our call to follow Jesus and participate in this life. Theme III: Suffering.  We walk alongside Jesus in the suffering of his self-offering. Theme IV: Resurrection.  In the last set of prayers, we share with Jesus in his rising to new life.  We share in living out the life and ministry of the risen Christ. The whole process invites us into a deeper awareness of the particularities of our own call to ministry.  We often find that the Spiritual Exercises lead us to discern God’s movement in us and gives us tools to continue growing in this daily practice. This process is not designed to be done on one’s own, but with an experienced director who can help us reflect on God’s movement in our lives. The exercises are geared particularly to moments in our lives when we are experiencing transition and change, when we are discerning a change of our vocations, or simply seeking a deeper relationship with God.  The exercises have potential to be transformative and people may find a huge shift between their life before the exercises and their life after the exercises. If you are wondering where God is calling you, come, set aside space to walk through the exercises with one of several experienced directors in our Diocese.  We invite you to move towards Gratitude, Freedom, and Generosity: Gratitude at who God is and what God has given, Freedom to be set free to serve in full Generosity.

If you are interested in learning more please send an email to ignatianspirit46@gmail.com.  We intend to facilitate a Spiritual Exercises Retreat in Daily Life with a small group of participants to run from September 2023 to May 2024.

Space is limited.  Please fill out the attached application form to apply.  You will be contacted for a simple one on one conversation preceding our entry into the exercises.

September 15th - 17th 2023

The Celebrating Women group at Grace United Church are planning to hold a Celebrating Women retreat on September 15-17 and would like to ask ladies from our parish to join them for the weekend.

Details are still to be determined, though it will likely involve events at Grace and in Edmonton; a more detailed schedule and theme will be available ready late August/early September.

The ladies of Grace would be delighted if some of us would like to attend and we could all get to know each other a bit more!
