Nalaxone training event last week

Nalaxone training event last week

Naloxone/Narcan is a potentially life-saving tool to reversing overdose from opioids.  It became clear through a few stories of family members and dementia patients, that Narcan is not only for use with street-involved folk: opiod drugs are so powerful these days that overdose can happen in many different situations.

Kristina who works with Boyle Street and has administered Narcan over 150 times in her life gave us training on how to use the Narcan kits we were going home with and, in particular, how to recognize the signs of opioid overdose.

Rachita, a near neighbour to St. A's and the owner of the new Capilano IDA Pharmacy near Canadian Tire, shared in the teaching and walked us through the effects of the drug.  The enjoyable component of the training involved using the actual needles to practice injection on some unsuspecting grapefruits.

The idea of the training evolved recently from a neighbourhood facebook post.  About 20 church and neighbourhood members participated.

If you would like to learn more, please visit the website below and keep your eye out for future trainings.

Anglican Community Reaches Out to Victims of Jasper Wildfire

Anglican Community Reaches Out to Victims of Jasper Wildfire

When 500-foot flames leapt toward mountain tops on July 23, there was little more firefighters, first responders, and Parks Canada employees could do to stop the wildfire from roaring through parts of the town of Jasper.

Pictures posted to social media on July 24, showed all that remained of the historic St. Mary and St. George Anglican Church, once a beautiful example of Gothic architecture, was a chimney stack and parts of the stone foundation. A sign on the church property that once welcomed visitors to Sunday worship, stood in stark contrast to its ashen surroundings.

“We are all heartbroken. There are no words,” said Bishop Stephen London in a letter confirming the sad news to the people of the Edmonton diocese. Incredibly, although it was later confirmed the fire had consumed one-third of the town, more than 20,000 residents and visitors had been safely evacuated.

Synod Update: Prayer, Resolutions Primer and Call for Nominations

Synod Update: Prayer, Resolutions Primer and Call for Nominations

We are full-on into summer and planning for our 69th Synod to be held in the fall. If you are a Synod delegate or appointee, or simply someone who is curious, please take note of the following:

  • The Rev. Canon Dr. Scott Sharman has written this Prayer to be used in the weeks leading up to the 69th Synod of the Diocese of Edmonton, to be held on Friday, October 18 and Saturday, October 19, 2024:

O God our Creator, you have always sent out your peoples in every age along unfamiliar paths as witnesses to your mercy and love. Each time you have shown us that it is in our faithful steps of journey into the unexpected where you will meet us afresh and anew. Draw near to us now, your church in synod, and walk closely with us as we prepare to travel this stretch of a shifting and uncertain road. Tell us yet again of your Good News for the strivings and longings of this time and place and cause our hearts to burn within us as we remember our call to become the story we tell. Through Christ, in the Spirit, for the life of the world. Amen.

  • He has also prepared a Motions to Synod Primer for submitting actions to be considered by the Synod. Please note: all notices of motion for the 69th Synod should be brought to the attention of the Agenda and Resolutions Committee by September 8.
  • Synod Nominations can be made online by clicking this LINK (read a Description of Elected Positions). The Rev. Clare Stewart is Chair of the Nominating Committee. Nominations will close on September 1.

Further information can be found on the Diocese of Edmonton Website. Questions? Please get in touch with the Rev. John Gee, Synod Secretary, at 780-439-7344, or treasurer@edmonton.anglican.ca .

Many 'Ah-ha!' Moments During Discovery Phase of Strategic Planning Journey

Many 'Ah-ha!' Moments During Discovery Phase of Strategic Planning Journey

By July, Anna Bubel, Strategic Planning Committee Consultant, had met with every parish in the Diocese of Edmonton, either in person or in a couple of extraordinary cases, via video or phone conference.

Bubel says she had many “Ah-ha!” moments as she drove 4,600 kms to visit parishes. These are her top three:

  1. “I am blown away by people's dedication. So many elderly women, in particular, are holding their church communities together despite declining numbers and increased expenses. They are clearly bound by a deep love of God and each other -- doing everything to keep their church doors open and keep Christ at the center of their lives. 'Small but mighty' was a description that was often repeated."
  2. “I was impressed by people's clear and practical thinking when sharing their challenges and opportunities. There was a level-headedness when describing the struggles of their parishes.”
  3. “The themes arising from the SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) Analyses and the sessions were overwhelmingly similar and did not cut neatly along urban vs. rural divides. Smaller parishes experience the same challenges as larger ones, albeit on a different scale. Rural parishioners tithe more per capita than their urban brethren. They are tackling the same challenges but with fewer human and financial resources. Parishes struggle with big-picture diocesan thinking (seeing themselves as part of a diocesan family of churches).”

The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius

The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius

Uncover the Heart of your Call

By Pat Jameson, Rev. Jonathan Crane

Loyola Press – a major source of references on the spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius describes the exercises as “a compilation of meditations, prayers, and contemplative practices developed by St. Ignatius of Loyola to help people deepen their relationship with God.” The exercises are a structured and guided approach designed to uncover the heart of our call to serve God and God’s people. St. Ignatius in his time, developed them as a tool to help young men discern if they were indeed called to serve as a Jesuit and take up the potential dangers of being sent all over the world in witness to God (think the movie “The Mission”). Originally, the Spiritual Exercises were used within a thirty-day silent retreat.  There remain a number of retreat houses in the world where you can still do this, but the Exercises are more commonly used these days as a thirty-week “retreat in daily life.” The structure of the weeks is a progressive immersion in scripture and prayer: they are not primarily an intellectual study of the scriptures, but a personal experience of the life of Jesus through prayer.  The process allows us grow in our ability to hear how deeply the Spirit of God is speaking to our spirit through the scriptures. The Exercises are broken into four sections, or movements of prayer through the thirty weeks. Theme I: God’s Love.  The exercises begin with an immersion in the love of God which invites us into a generous offering of our whole selves just as we are. Theme II: Invitation.  The second movement focusses on God’s hope for the world as it is expressed in the gift of Jesus and his ministry and our call to follow Jesus and participate in this life. Theme III: Suffering.  We walk alongside Jesus in the suffering of his self-offering. Theme IV: Resurrection.  In the last set of prayers, we share with Jesus in his rising to new life.  We share in living out the life and ministry of the risen Christ. The whole process invites us into a deeper awareness of the particularities of our own call to ministry.  We often find that the Spiritual Exercises lead us to discern God’s movement in us and gives us tools to continue growing in this daily practice. This process is not designed to be done on one’s own, but with an experienced director who can help us reflect on God’s movement in our lives. The exercises are geared particularly to moments in our lives when we are experiencing transition and change, when we are discerning a change of our vocations, or simply seeking a deeper relationship with God.  The exercises have potential to be transformative and people may find a huge shift between their life before the exercises and their life after the exercises. If you are wondering where God is calling you, come, set aside space to walk through the exercises with one of several experienced directors in our Diocese.  We invite you to move towards Gratitude, Freedom, and Generosity: Gratitude at who God is and what God has given, Freedom to be set free to serve in full Generosity.

If you are interested in learning more please send an email to ignatianspirit46@gmail.com.  We intend to facilitate a Spiritual Exercises Retreat in Daily Life with a small group of participants to run from September 2024 to May 2025.

Space is limited.  Please fill out the attached application form to apply.  You will be contacted for a simple one on one conversation preceding our entry into the exercises.

Scott Brubacher says he was impressed this year by the level of engagement from dioceses that are actively involved in camping ministry, some with as many as three summer camps. “We had 10 dioceses rallied around 16 camps this year…It was wonderful to get a big-picture view of camping ministry across the Anglican Church of Canada.”
