First Sunday of Lent - 26th February 2023Jesus is Tested in the Wilderness Genesis 2:15-17; 3:1-7 Psalm 32 Romans 5:12-19 Matthew 4:1-11 |
Wednesday 22nd February - Saturday April 8th 2023
Lent, in the Christian church, is a period of penitential preparation for Easter. In Western churches it begins on Ash Wednesday, six and a half weeks before Easter, and provides a 40-day period for fasting and abstinence (Sundays are excluded), in imitation of Jesus Christ’s fasting in the wilderness before he began his public ministry. A period of preparation and fasting likely has been observed before the Easter festival since apostolic times, though the practice was not formalized until the First Council of Nicaea in 325 CE. It was a time of preparation of candidates for baptism and a time of penance for grievous sinners who were excluded from Communion and were preparing for their restoration. As a sign of their penitence, they wore sackcloth and were sprinkled with ashes. This form of public penance began to die out in the 9th century, and it became customary for all the faithful to be reminded of the need for penitence by receiving an imposition of ashes on their foreheads on the first day of Lent—hence the name Ash Wednesday. In the early centuries, fasting rules were strict, as they still are in Eastern churches. One meal a day was allowed in the evening, and meat, fish, eggs, and butter were forbidden. The Eastern church also restricts the use of wine, oil, and dairy products. In the West these fasting rules have gradually been relaxed. The strict law of fasting among Roman Catholics was dispences with during Wp+ord War II, and only Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are now kept as Lenten fast days. However, the emphasis on penitential practice and almsgiving remains, and many Catholics also observe a meatless fast on Fridays during Lent. In addition, many Christians often choose to give up specific pleasures, such as sweets, alcohol, or social media, during Lent as a way to foster simplicity and self control; many use their cravings or desires for these items as a reminder to pray and to refocus on spiritual matters. In the Anglican churches The Book of Common Prayer prescribes that Lent be observed with fasting. |

World Day of Prayer 2023Theme: 'I have heard about your faith' Ephesians 1:15-19 World Day of Prayer is an annual Christian ecumenical worship service dedicated to International Women's Day which occurs on March 8th. It is normally held on the first Friday of March. This year the service was written by the Women of Taiwan and is about issues in Taiwan. The service is recorded and can be seen any time between March 1st to September 1st 2023. The funds raised stay in Canada. The hosts of last year's World Day of Prayer could not find a new host therefore, for this year, it is recommended that we watch the service the following methods: 1. The best site is the Women's Inter-Church Council of Canada website - wicc.org. This has a lot of background information about the issues in Taiwan. 2. The service is also on TV in the Edmonton area on Friday March 3rd at 4pm and Saturday March 4th at 11.30am. It is being broadcast on YESTV (CKES). 3. Shaw Direct West is also airing the programme on Saturday March 4th at 4pm and Sunday March 5th at 10am We hope that many people are able to take part in the viewing of this year's offering for the World Day of Prayer.

Shrove Tuesday Pancake SupperTuesday, February 21st 2023 At last, after a hiatus of a couple of years, the Alter Guild were able to resume the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper. Even with the extremely chilly weather, it was a rousing success with in excess of 110 people attending!!! You could tell how much everyone had missed attending this event. One and all appeared to have a wonderful time digging into the offerings and visiting with old friends. It was also nice to see many new faces coming through the door. Save to say there were no left overs, instead more plates needed to be found!! The Alter Guild would like to thank everyone who volunteered to assist with the evening, setting up tables, preparing in the kitchen, greeting at the door and, sometimes the worst task of all, helping with the clearing and washing up!! The evening couldn't have taken place or been such a success without these dedicated individuals. Faith & Joe, new to the parish, got stuck in helping and seemed to enjoy the comraderie belonging to the organising committee entailed. It was a blessing that Rene deMeuilles offered to update the sign outside the church, in the cold, to let everyone know about the event. From everyone at the parish, a very big thank you to the Alter Guild for all their hard work both planning and preparing this event. It was very much appreciated by all those who were able to attend. It has been a long time so nice to be able to feel a bit 'normal' again. |
A moment to face our mortality with God; The beginning of LentWednesday 22nd February 2023 Pray for yourself. Pray for the world. Make for yourself a holy Lent. Our Ash Wednesday service, shared with members of Grace United Church, was both an in person event and livestreamed for those who could not make the service or could not navigate the cold. We gathered in God's name, reflected on the call to live autentic lives and receive ashes marked in a cross on our forehead with the words, "you are dust, and to dust you shall return". We then shared in holy communion which drew us nearer to God. The service, although similar each year, was 'beautiful, relaxing and serene' in the words of one parishioner. A gentle introduction to the Lenten journey which is just beginning.

Kitchen Cleaning
A few folks gathered this past Saturday to do a deep clean on the church kitchen. It needed it!! After over two years of inactivity there was a lot of dust and clutter. With a full afternoon of work, we only finished the top level of cupboards. We look forward to another session coming up soon. Thank you to all who gave up their time to help with what was rather a dirty task. For more infomation visit:

Highlights from the AGMHeld Sunday February 12th, 2023 It is a new year. We have much to celebrate. We have much to look towards. This year's AGM was well attended both in person and via zoom and gave much to look forward to. After an introductory prayer by Rev Jonathan many items were discussed and voted upon. It was most welcome that many people had given their input on the questionnaire recently provided; this included what was being celebrated at St A's, what has been personally helpful to you at St A's this past year and how God has been at work at St A's. Those present reviewed these comments and added more to expand these catagories. A lively discussion and contemplation of our church and community in the year ahead took place. There was much enthusiasm over fundraising that was proposed by Megan. This seems to be an area that many people are willing to participate in and any ideas would be welcome. After so long it will be nice to be able to have community interaction within our parish. There is also a much anticipated re introduction of the simple supper, provided by a younger generation overseen by those of an older generation with a wealth of experience .. how nice to see the coming together of our church community. Rewilding will be a constant throughout the coming months. The congregation voted unanimously on a reworking of the car parking area to provide both parking for those with mobility issues and a start to re work the surrounding area with vegetation and trees!! Keep your eyes out for what will be going on and how you can contribute. Jonathan brought up a novel idea of those of an older generation 'adopting' a member of the congregation of the younger generation. What a lovely way of blending our church community and making people, both old and young, feel like they belong in a more intimate way. A new vision group was elected to look forward for our community, what we need to focus on and where we are going. Minutes of the meeting will be available soon. Please visit the link in the next post to hear/read Rev Jonathan's report .. it is indeed inspiring. On a final but very important note, the luncheon provided by the vision group was most appreciated!!! There were so many compliments on the lovely sandwiches that had been ordered and the homemade baking. It was nice, also, to have our younger members assisting and providing enthusiasm with regard our drinks and sweets on offer. A special thank you, as well, to John, Charlotte, Aaron, Shaun and Christa who helped to set up and provided popcorn and a movie for our younger congregants so that their parents could be part of the meeting 'upstairs' (If anyone's name has been spelt wrong or if anyone has been left out, I do apologise)

Bishop's Visit & PotluckSunday, March 5, 2023 We are pleased to welcome during worship March 5th our local Bishop Stephen London. Bishop Steve has been travelling around to every church in the diocese since his consecration in September 2021 and this is our turn to welcome him. Bishops in Anglican tradition are our chief pastor and hold care of the spiritual health of the Diocese. Unlike some other episcopal traditions with bishops (ie. Catholic), in the Anglican world, diocesan bishops are the highest level of authority. Beyond them, any provincial, national, or international archbishops are 'structures of unity.'

An Evening of Prayer & Worship for LentSaturday March 18th 2023 at 6.30pm We have so many wonderful expressions of prayer in our church. With this in mind we are hoping many will be excited to participate in this evening, a lenten journey, which will combine a variety of prayers/worship with musical accompaniment which will make for a unique St A's experience. |
Flowers for EasterFrom the Alter Guild It is always so nice to see our church decorated for the celebration of Easter. If anyone is able to donate to help us provide floral arrangements to adorn the church during this time it would be most appreciated. Donations can be made via Tithe.ly or by cash/cheque. The latter two methods can be handed in at the church office or given to a member of the Alter Guild. Many thanks in advance for helping to beautify our place of worship this Easter. |
