Lower Hall Bathroom Renovations UPDATE

Lower Hall Bathroom Renovations UPDATE

Second phase completed!! Pop in to have a look!!

Further to the $5000 grant we received, plus and additional $1000 donation, work has continued this past week and phase two of the Lower Hall bathroom renovation is now complete.

This past week:

New counters have been set in as well as new taps, lighting and mirrors .. now just painting to be done!!

Previously:

New bathroom flooring has been laid and looks fresh and clean plus a new urinal partition.

Final phase - painting

This was delayed due to a scheduling conflict for the painters but will be completed on Friday 2nd of August.

A big thank you to Rita & Randy for spearheading the project, researching into material and companies to complete the work and prioritising what has to be done.  Randy has also played a major part in installations.

Parishes to receive report on engagement session by end of month

Dear friends,

I wanted to write to give you a brief update on our Strategic plan process. As we head into August, Anna Bubel, our Diocesan Strategic Planning Committee Consultant, has met with nearly every parish, either in person or in a couple of extraordinary cases, via video or phone conference. We are grateful to all of you for listening in spirit together by completing the membership survey and/or participating in a parish engagement session. As with any plan, we first needed to listen to our parishes and parishioners.

St A's is participating, once again, in preparing lunches for the Bissell Centre!

St A's is participating, once again, in preparing lunches for the Bissell Centre!

Our date is Sunday August 18th 2024

St A's is once again participating in the lunch programme run by the Inner City Pastoral Mission who provide an interdenominatonal Christian Ministry of Presence whoare guided by the Spirit of God and walk in partnership with Edmonton's Inner City Community.

This year we have been asked to provide 100 lunch bags and deliver them to the Bissell Centre on Sunday August 18th (we are partnered with St Luke's who will also supply 100 lunch bags) - it is indeed a testament of the plight of the inner city that we are being asked to provide double what was needed last year.

We are looking for donations of the following items to fill the lunch bags:

100 bottles of water

100 juice boxes (pure juice)

100 cheese strings or individually wrapped pieces of cheese

Wrapped muffins/breakfast bars/protein bars (not small granola bars) - we need 100 in total not 100 of each

Peanut butter & crackers / cheese & crackers / tuna & crackers / chicken & crackers - we need 100 in total not 100 of each (these packs can be found at any supermarket but best prices are Walmart or Superstore)

100 bags of regular sized bags (28g) potato chips/Doritos/Cheezies

100 oranges and 100 bananas.  ** these will need to be bought as close to the date of delivery as possible.

100 large ziplock bags

1 large can of ground coffee          1 x 4kg bag of sugar

If you are able to provide any of the above please let the office know. If you are unable to purchase any items yourself but wish to contribute a monetary donation towards items this would be most welcome.

Food items can be delivered to the church or church office; monetary donations can be made via e transfer to office@staugustinesedmonton.com, via cheque dropped/posted into the office or the collection plate or via tithe.ly online.  Please do not hand money directly to an individual for donation purposes.

** as St A's has a commercially certified kitchen we could also make up sandwiches to be delivered with the lunch bags **

We will also require volunteers to make up the lunchbags - a date will be set when space is allocated, hopefully Saturday 17th August - and volunteers to deliver to the Bissell Centre on the 18th between 8.15 and 8.30am.  If anyone is able to help in this capacity please let the office know as soon as possible via email at office@staugustinesedmonton.com.  A sign up sheet will also be made available.

Perhaps some of the younger members of our church congregation might like to take part!!

Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide.

The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius

The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius

Uncover the Heart of your Call

By Pat Jameson, Rev. Jonathan Crane

Loyola Press – a major source of references on the spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius describes the exercises as “a compilation of meditations, prayers, and contemplative practices developed by St. Ignatius of Loyola to help people deepen their relationship with God.” The exercises are a structured and guided approach designed to uncover the heart of our call to serve God and God’s people. St. Ignatius in his time, developed them as a tool to help young men discern if they were indeed called to serve as a Jesuit and take up the potential dangers of being sent all over the world in witness to God (think the movie “The Mission”). Originally, the Spiritual Exercises were used within a thirty-day silent retreat.  There remain a number of retreat houses in the world where you can still do this, but the Exercises are more commonly used these days as a thirty-week “retreat in daily life.” The structure of the weeks is a progressive immersion in scripture and prayer: they are not primarily an intellectual study of the scriptures, but a personal experience of the life of Jesus through prayer.  The process allows us grow in our ability to hear how deeply the Spirit of God is speaking to our spirit through the scriptures. The Exercises are broken into four sections, or movements of prayer through the thirty weeks. Theme I: God’s Love.  The exercises begin with an immersion in the love of God which invites us into a generous offering of our whole selves just as we are. Theme II: Invitation.  The second movement focusses on God’s hope for the world as it is expressed in the gift of Jesus and his ministry and our call to follow Jesus and participate in this life. Theme III: Suffering.  We walk alongside Jesus in the suffering of his self-offering. Theme IV: Resurrection.  In the last set of prayers, we share with Jesus in his rising to new life.  We share in living out the life and ministry of the risen Christ. The whole process invites us into a deeper awareness of the particularities of our own call to ministry.  We often find that the Spiritual Exercises lead us to discern God’s movement in us and gives us tools to continue growing in this daily practice. This process is not designed to be done on one’s own, but with an experienced director who can help us reflect on God’s movement in our lives. The exercises are geared particularly to moments in our lives when we are experiencing transition and change, when we are discerning a change of our vocations, or simply seeking a deeper relationship with God.  The exercises have potential to be transformative and people may find a huge shift between their life before the exercises and their life after the exercises. If you are wondering where God is calling you, come, set aside space to walk through the exercises with one of several experienced directors in our Diocese.  We invite you to move towards Gratitude, Freedom, and Generosity: Gratitude at who God is and what God has given, Freedom to be set free to serve in full Generosity.

If you are interested in learning more please send an email to ignatianspirit46@gmail.com.  We intend to facilitate a Spiritual Exercises Retreat in Daily Life with a small group of participants to run from September 2024 to May 2023.

Space is limited.  Please fill out the attached application form to apply.  You will be contacted for a simple one on one conversation preceding our entry into the exercises.

SYTK 2024 Results

Scott Brubacher says he was impressed this year by the level of engagement from dioceses that are actively involved in camping ministry, some with as many as three summer camps. “We had 10 dioceses rallied around 16 camps this year…It was wonderful to get a big-picture view of camping ministry across the Anglican Church of Canada.”
