Scripture Readings ~ Third Sunday of Easter

 Acts 9:1-6, (7-20)  • Psalm 30  • Revelation 5:11-14

John 21:1-19

Creator of the universe, you made the world in beauty, and restore all things in glory through the victory of Jesus Christ. We pray that, wherever your image is still disfigured by poverty, sickness, selfishness, war and greed, the new creation in Jesus Christ may appear in justice, love, and peace, to the glory of your name. Amen.

Introducing The Rev. Philip Penrod

Introducing The Rev. Philip Penrod

Intern Clergy while Rev. Johnathan is on Sabbatical

Reverend Philip Penrod lives in Beaumont with his partner Tessa, their three kids - Zephyra (12), Josiah (9), Solomon (7) and their covid kittens - Percy and Dusty.   A graduate (M.Div) of Lutheran Theological Seminary at Saskatoon (2011), Philip very much benefited from spiritual formation and education under mentors and alongside colleagues in the Saskatoon Theological Union (Lutheran, Anglican and United Church seminaries).  After graduation and ordination, Philip served 10 years as Pastor of Our Savior Lutheran on Callingwood Road in Edmonton.

Philip's interests include: TaeKwon Do, governance, community organizing, anti-racism, environmental stewardship, preaching craft, the Calgary Flames and Pokemon Go.   "I am thrilled to answer this call to serve alongside the people of St. Augustine's as you press into God's gift of sabbath."  May we all be upheld along the way by a strong sense of God's grace manifest in abundant provision and just protection.

Leviticus 25:1-7

25 The Lord said to Moses at Mount Sinai, 2 “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘When you enter the land I am going to give you, the land itself must observe a sabbath to the Lord. 3 For six years sow your fields, and for six years prune your vineyards and gather their crops. 4 But in the seventh year the land is to have a year of sabbath rest, a sabbath to the Lord. Do not sow your fields or prune your vineyards. 5 Do not reap what grows of itself or harvest the grapes of your untended vines. The land is to have a year of rest.6 Whatever the land yields during the sabbath year will be food for you—for yourself, your male and female servants, and the hired worker and temporary resident who live among you, 7 as well as for your livestock and the wild animals in your land. Whatever the land produces may be eaten.

Yours, In Christ,

 Philip +

St. Augustine's Book Club is Looking for new Readers

St. Augustine's Book Club is looking for readers to join the book club. We meet at 10:30 on the last Tuesday of the month in the basement lounge, narthex, or lawn in front of the church (depending on the season, weather). Going out for lunch after is optional.

We choose our books in May for the following year. Members make suggestions, we discuss, chose and the list is created. We decided years ago that all books are spiritual, so our list is wide ranging. Our discussions center around the ideas explored in the books and how these views relate to our lives.

If this interests you please contact Phyllis Molyneux at phyllismolyneux@gmail.com or drop into a book club meeting or both.

Wednesday Night Sharing Circle

Wednesday Night Sharing Circle

Wednesday, May 4, 2022

Sharing in circle has a long history of transformation and community strength in both indigenous and addictions recovery traditions.

Sharing in circle allows us both opportunity to listen, and when our turn arrives, to speak.

A topic is raised each Wednesday in the realms of Faith, Justice, Spirituality, and Action in the Christian tradition that we are invited to reflect on and share if we wish.

Rev. Jonathan usually facilitates the circle.  Please contact him for the zoom access: rector@staugustinesedmonton.com

We have used books, video, or individual presentations as our 'prompts' for the evening.

"Doors" open at 7:45pm, process begins at 8pm-9pm.  The zoom stays on until 9:30pm latest for those who want to chat more.

Ecumenical Shared Ministries

Ecumenical Shared Ministries

Virtual Workshop - Saturday, May 14

The Church of God endures from generation to generation. However, what it means to be the local church in any given place and time is always changing. That is no different today. In a former age, when church attendance was high, and funding plentiful, it may not have seemed unreasonable for every urban neighbourhood or rural town to have six or seven different churches of varying denominations all within the space of a few blocks. Today, however, with shrinking church communities and declining resources being the more norm, it is no longer a matter of preserving the local Anglican, Lutheran, United, or Presbyterian church on a given street, but rather of trying to figure out how to maintain a vibrant Christian ministry presence at all. Ecumenical Shared Ministries (ESMs) represents a way of moving forward. Please join us for this workshop and discussion!
