April 21 – Community Garden: Spring Potluck, Blessing of Seed & Preseason Meeting

This Thursday is a big one for the Sunshine Community Garden, and you don’t have to be a member of the garden to take part.  All events held at st. Augustine’s Church.

This Thursday, to celebrate the beginning of the gardening season, there will be a Spring Potluck at 5:30 pm, and then Rev. Jonathan Crane will lead a short “Blessing of the Seed” outside in the garden at 6:30 pm. All are welcome to attend either of these two special events. The food is always delicious, and it will be great to reconnect with each other after a long winter.

Following the potluck and blessing, those who wish to garden one of the garden plots this year MUST be in attendance at 7pm for the preseason meeting. (See below)

It is almost time to get back into the garden! The Sunshine Garden is gearing up for its second gardening season. If you plan to garden with us this year, please plan to attend this pre-season garden meeting. We will be signing our garden contracts, paying our garden fees ($20), signing up for work parties and doing the final plot assignment. Please note that ALL gardeners MUST attend this meeting in order to receive a garden plot this year.

If you are interested in being involved in the Sunshine Garden, but don’t necessarily want your own individual plot, consider becoming a “Friend of the Garden”. This garden membership allows you to help care and have access to our 9 communal plots, edible berries and fruit trees that surround the garden. Consider this if you would like to share or learn gardening knowledge, and enjoy making new friends with your neighbours. Cost is $10 for the season. Tell your neighbours and friends!

We have the following Garden Committee positions available this year:
– Water Coordinator – maintains the water cubes when low, it may work well to have two people share the role, but this role must be filled, as water is vital to the garden!
– Assistant Compost Coordinator – Jocelyn will be going on sabbatical next year and would like to mentor someone this year for the role next year
– Social Coordinator – helps plan events, potlucks, parties
– Fundraising and Grants – researches and applies for grants, coordinates fundraising

At this meeting we will also be selling tickets to two special events:

Fulton Place Garden Tour – June 21 – 22 from 4:30- 8:00 pm
All proceeds go to benefit the Sunshine Garden, so tell your neighbours and friends to get in on this lovely event. We have so many beautiful gardens in our neighbourhood, and much of the bounty often lies hidden in the backyard! It was a great success last year, and this year – you might even get to see a working beehive or backyard chickens! Cost is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, children free.

Pruning and Bud Grafting Seminar – July 20 from 6:30 – 8:30 pm
This seminar will be led by Joachim Hengge of Sprout Farms Apple Orchards. We will start at the Sunshine Garden and then walk down the street to see a demonstration on two established fruit trees. Cost is $15 and proceeds go towards the garden.
